Denver…….ahh Denver
Colorado has always been a cherished place for us and iconic for so many reasons. We always jump at the chance to get back there, and when we are there we are reminded of how truly unique the region is. We love it there, we always will; yet it is simultaneously the best and most taxing of trips full of unexpected challenges and laugh your ass off surprises.

Denver, 2008, we got together with a bunch of Leafers across the country that all chipped in to rent a house for a TLG weekend which will go down as one of my all-time great memories. This time around we went with a “quieter” approach. This trip was specifically to Denver to see Tea Leaf Green, with little else planned. In an effort to simply get back to basics, where it all began if you will, we intended to go with little fanfare and parties, rent a cheap hotel, and have only the expectation of a trip to a place we love to see THE band we love. We got a lot more that that!

Trying not to get sucked into the forums was a tough thing to do as the shows approached. We had limited planning and contact with folks, only a taper geek and a super cool Denver local (who, incidentally is probably the only person we would let babysit our children, ever).

Quietly random events began occurring………

Shortly before the event:
-we learned that a long time Leafer was planning to come out of hiding and surprise his roommate in Denver.
-we learned that the dynamic duo from Chicago were coming to Denver, both of whom were with us in Tea Leaf Denver 2008

We are scheduled to fly the day of the show, early enough to catch an acoustic in-store performance prior to the main shows. We board the plane and of course we sit, and sit, and sit some more. We cant for the life of us figure out what the problem is, then we hear that one of our pilots has been delayed. Then through super stealth communications we get this:

Apparently this joker was mucking around in the planes causing my co-pilot and my flight to be delayed.

Finally, after an uneventful flight we touch down in Denver. Scramble to meet up with Dave and Stubby (now that we are almost an hour late), careen to and fro to get into Denver proper, and finally to find our hotel. (A note about traveling for TLG and hotels: I like to find hotels close to the venue so I do not have to drive or cab it. This is very important to me but in Denver it keeps one limited to pretty much 2 options, The Ramada Inn or The Econo Lodge, both of which are on Colfax and about a mile away from the Bluebird Theater. The area around the hotels is great for out-of-towners and folks partying….lots of bars, restaurants, glass shops, dispensaries, convenience stores, liquor stores, etc).

The in-store performance is always a pretty cool event that seems to tie into the Bluebird Theater shows quite nicely. Twist and Shout is a relatively large record store on Colfax with cool poster room and low stage for performers. The shows here are just appetizers really and generally last no more than 30 minutes or so. In 2008 it was just Josh and Trevor acoustic, this time it was Acoustic Tea Leaf Green! Froey called this on the forum a week or two earlier, uh…err…”how nice it would be”, it was awesome. We had the whole line up (with Scotty and Cochran working a single percussion kit in tandem).

The in-stores always kinda freak me out a bit. Typically, I just drove, flew, drove, checked in and did some “Welcome to Colorado” pre-game formalities. By the time I get to Twist and Shout I am slightly disoriented, adjusting to my new environment, and feeling the effects of being a mile high. Just before the show started BillyBaroo comes jumping up to me screaming how he “… just moved to Denver 3 days ago, I said “no”, he said “yea”, I said “no”, he said “yea”, and that was it – never saw him again. This time I just happened to be hanging out up close to the stage when the band came out and that’s where I stayed.

Tea Leaf Green came out to cheers and began playing. Right off, I am kind of overwhelmed at all that has transpired to get me to this point. It was almost exactly 2 years to the day that I had stood in that very room embarking on a very similar journey. This was different though. Two years earlier the line up was different both for the in-store and for TLG in general, at that time all seemed a little less stable on all fronts. This time it all felt considerably more grounded both for me and the band as we eased into the set. Immediately I noticed a certain sonic structure to TLG, a control and musicianship that spoke clearly to years of experience ripe with challenges, opportunities, and growth. This was a different band now. Slowly a set emerged before my eyes and ears where perfection was found at every turn, as the band found their stride in complex rhythms, tight intricate layers of sound, and a sense of ownership and mastery. I was awestruck, once again, as I was from when I first found TLG in 2004 – this was new again!

As I stand there literally in front of Trevor, I notice how much he is enjoying various aspects of the performance. Of course I will never really know exactly what was going on but to me I really got the feeling that he was peaking off of the music and the composition. Trevor sounded strong and was very much on point for the whole in-store show, as he hit particular vocal peaks or phrases he would grin to himself in much the same way I must be grinning to myself when the band does something particularly colorful to my mind. Trevor was where I keyed in first, but rest of TLG also had strong performances. The duo of Scotty and Cochrane was simply unbelievable; the rhythmic steam power these two produced was awesome. The worked off of a single percussion stand and simply shared aspects of the structure at different times (cymbal, tom head/ compact conga, etc), picking up various instruments (egg shakers, seed rattles, tambourine, etc). The passion with which this set was unfolding put me into this kind of choked up state of mind. Once again I felt that emotional sense of witnessing all things possible and time captured. Yea I was a bit choked up, so much so I had to dial up Heady for a phone-cast of Carter Hotel – I never do phone-casts…………..

The in-store ended abruptly for me, not really knowing how long they played I was simply caught up in the moment……….then the music stopped. I kind of looked around and realized, “oh…it’s over”. Having a few hours till the Bluebird, it was on to the next mission……..supplies and drinks. Froey gave rides to a few of us and we made our way back to the Econo Lodge. They hooked Froey up with parking for the weekend which I thought was cool and we proceeded to the room for medication and supplies. The walk to the theater from the hotel is about a mile and a half, yet under the right conditions one hardly noticed the journey at all………ha. Our first stop was a bar that had a decent outdoor patio and was a nice rest stop on our way. At this point I was kind of feeling like crap, allergies and adjusting to the Colorado climate, I would play through though. Leaving the bar we took a few twists and turns for a session and wound up across the street from the venue. The GooseTown Tavern worked out to be a pretty good anchor for pregame drinks, local beers and mellow scene. Somewhere at this point I lost my voice entirely, allergies?, not sure why. FOTD and Jen had a field day with all the ways I was to communicate from here on in. Damn, the show did not even start and I had no voice at all…..i told them (in my custom sign language) that my dance skillz would speak for me.

The Bluebird Theater has one of the best setups for a venue I have been in; either that or the way the crowd interacts with the venue, but the venue simply is my number one place to see TLG. The band seems to love the venue, the sound (recordings cannot do it justice), and the lights all make this place an amazing canvas for TLG. As we walked in there was no security shuffle at all, very chill and very much ok on all fronts. Making our way to the bar and theater proper one of the opening bands was laying down a sick psychedelic Zeppelin cover that immediately caught us all into the moment. This was game on, and after a bit of arranging drinks we headed down to our home for the weekend. The Bluebird has about 4 tiers from the bar down to a floor area and the stage. The first tier before the floor provided a railing and puts you just about 15 feet from and level with the stage. Undeniably the most perfect place in the house and we owned that rail for two nights.

I was not overly partied all weekend, enough though (as the quality in Denver is over the top), and much of the motivation of this trip was to get back to the music of TLG and find my relationship with it once again. If the band has had growing pains so have I and I came looking for redemption, with an open mind free of opinions and targets. I did not care what TLG played, had no opinions of openers or closers, and wanted nothing more than for it all to come to me once again.

Here we go with the first night in Denver! Woohoo! I believe that no recordings can do these shows justice. TLG played expertly with a “structure” I have never heard from them. Historically, for me, TLG was always a strong first or second set band. Additionally, their jams never really formalized for me. In other words, when they got into the “meat” of song it would go somewhere and come back but never really got to the next level where they held their creation in suspension for any period of time (think Pink Floyd Echoes). It always seemed just a bit out of reach. Tunes like Devils Pay, Barnacle B, or Precious Stone all have strong themes that when properly formalized have the power to transform a venue to another place. In fact, maybe songs like that by their very nature could produce this affect, i.e. talking about spacey things sounds kinda spacey. Things have changed. TLG showed a maturity through their setlist that I have never witnessed before. Almost every song was developed strongly to another plane with thematic expressions played out powerfully with articulation and purpose. The interaction and communication on stage was simply electrifying. Now, I have no idea what they played, missed at least half the setlist, kept no record of the details, BUT; I can tell you without hesitation that everyone on that first tier was getting down to new songs and old. Glancing around found Stubby and Brew throwing down, Mr. T dancing as only Mr. T can and everyone else seemingly just as captivated as I was. I think I pretty much was swept up by TLG and carried away to be deposited down river with a black eye and missing one shoe.

Post show was (as often is) a hazy sort of lingering affair, fueled by incense and drinks and the sense that something (you are not quite sure what) just happened. As we spilled out into Denver the party continued easily and carried on until almost morning, easy and flowing much as it started. The Denver vibe is laid back and easy…..

Colfax on a Saturday morning in October has an odd sunny fall glow to it. I am not sure if the tone is of emergence or mending. Regardless, me and FOTD tended to our wounds (real or imaginary) and caught a simple if not cheap breakfast in the lobby, only to spend the day either drifting around Colfax (running into other leafers), resting, or sleeping, or performing the art of sleep-resting. Everyone we spoke to pretty much had the same experience. Lubage on the other hand was up at 8am texting me how awesome his hot tub was…….(303!!! ), and in the bar by early afternoon.

Getting back on our feet for round two was like pulling it together for the final round in a cage match. The mantra was …”play through”, for we knew that no matter how sick, tired, or burnt we felt in just a matter of a few days we would give ANYTHING to be right here again. As we get in gear texts start flowing and folks start gathering, we hit up Froey who meets us in our room for pre walk pre game preparations. As we head on our walk to the pregame bar everyone is just a bit disjointed and rattled getting the mind ready so the body will follow. As we step into the GooseTown Tavern once again we got the opportunity to mingle and drink a bit more freely than the in-store allowed us the previous night. Faces and names came together a bit better now and we all settled into a comfortable pregame exercise.

Deciding to head into the venue early the second night was a good choice. Trevor and Todd both mentioned how much they like Truth and Salvage Co. and Dave wanted to catch the local band after hearing some of their work the previous night. As we all met up again, things we nicely flowing with folks sorting out their various libations and positions, socially moving about. We never struggled once for space and easily commanded the first tier once again; I think anyone else there could see that we were collectively a presence work WITH versus against. Being in the venue for the two opening bands in fact gave us an evening full of music which made the huge TLG set more understandable. The Bluebird allows customers to come and go freely so if you wanted to smoke no problem, go to bar, no problem.

TLG Denver night two delivered the same articulate, though maybe a bit tired, performance as the night before. I found myself captivated by new and old songs alike. I was surprised at how what I thought was old, was really OLD, and what I thought was new was actually a bit older than I had thought (Reed and I negotiated those facts the night before…lol). As for a tour closer I cant look at one night or the other, as twin shows at the Bluebird are a single organism that begins and ends in a matter of 48hrs with all manners of peaks and valleys. Leafers as always made a killing though, and by Invasion and Baseball, Froey was throwing down harder on the floor than anyone prior as Josh played just for him…lol, all the while Stubby and Brew found a perch across the way and were throwing down their own moves above and across the floor. The energy by late into the second night was maybe even stronger than the first night (as we all realize the inevitable mortality of this event?). Strong collaborations between musicians and cheers dominated night two and TLG closed strong with G3. Another one in the books and cemented my fascination for the band once again, new and strong.

Post show hugs and libations followed and somehow we missed funckycree yet again, twice, until we got to say hello as we were leaving. Knowing we had to get up for an early flight FOTD, Froey, and I headed back to the hotel, said our goodbyes, and managed to sleep and actually get up the next morning on time. Brew was kind enough to give us a ride to the airport but due to the Denver marathon was stumped in getting to us. This resulted in us having to negotiate our way down Colfax about a mile to meet up with Brew and Stubby, ultimately this was a win/win as FOTD placed second in the marathon with full back pack no less…..! A few twists and turns later dropping off the rental, we all make it in to DIA and surprisingly catch our flights.

This was a stellar weekend, new and old friends, great times, great band, great city, great venue……It was great to see the return of Mr. T, and the addition of Reed and Cochrane really stood out as TLG moves into a new era. I am optimistic and look forward to doing it over again.

For years leafers have been traversing this wide country (and a few others too) in pursuit of good times with great people and facemelting music. Collectively we’ve traveled thousands miles of roads – jamming out to road tunes, chatting about music, politics, and life in general, getting lost or stuck in traffic… and eventually pulling in to a parking lot and gearing up for another evening with Tea Leaf Green.

Starting on September 23rd keep your eyes peeled here for snippets of hilarity and first impressions of shows….

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10/3/10 St. Rocke Hermosa Beach CA.
Well it’s here the last entry for the California run. This was the third night in a row I was going to be able to run lights and after looking up the Lighting Specs I was kind of excited. Well of course equipment is completely dependent on placement and the St. Rocke is not set up for Rock shows. It is part of the fun though figuring out a different room each night.
It’s a nice smallish club with couches and more set up for acoustic music or Jazz. Tea Leaf Green didn’t care though and came out with guns blazing. Jezebel>Garden 2>Garden 3. I completely recall the first 2 songs but for some reason Garden 3 escapes me. Luckily we have Leafers with better recall who remember singing along. I do get into a different zone lighting the band and “songs” kind of meld. Stick to the Shallows was next and Josh sang it with gusto and brought the song to a crushing end.
One Reason had the whole place singing along and Honeymooners was a very nice compliment to it. Honey Bee was a nice bust out we hadn’t heard the whole run. 7th Story was smoldering and built to a great crescendo. New Shoes again got the crowd moving and was a real blast to light as it’s conducive to color washes. Can’t Get High built to such a rocking finish that it seemed so natural to segue right into Incandescent Devil which had the crowd moving like maniacs. Hanging from a Tree was fun to light as I was able to compliment the dark eerie feelings the song conveys. Hot Dog had Pete Wall on Saxophone and was just a cornucopia of improv in which the whole band just let loose.
For Every Lonely Lady was next and was a great way to bring the house a breather after what had just ensued. Emma Lee was a nice sing along and the set closing Reservoir was a surprise but really killed in that spot.
The encore of One New Day>Slept through Sunday was phenomenal and had the crowd so wound up the band was leaving the stage and Josh stopped and started discussing with Trevor and someone off stage if they wanted to/could play one more. So he and Trevor started Truck Stop Sally and the rest of the band kind of filtered in and if the place allowed smoking it would have been filled with that California Love. Well Josh was not finished and the last song played on this wonderful run was DEATHCAKE!!!!! Talk about an easy song to light! Strobe the heck out of the stage and when Josh sings let up. hahahahahaha.
Well it has been a heck of a ride from Petaluma to Hermosa Beach. Hanging out with all the friends I have in this wonderful Leafer Family we have, taking in the beautiful sights, intimate venues and countryside in the Great State of California, watching the band have so much fun and growing by leaps and bounds in front of our eyes creating some of the best music in Rock and Roll right now, hanging out with the band and then to be asked if I want to light them?
Yeah I think this guy had a pretty nice week and a half on Tea Leaf Green tour and I hope I was able to convey some of that in my first attempt at blogging and you were able to enjoy living vicariously through it.
‘Til next time my fellow Leafers and those reading who soon will be Leafers. Cheers and Thanks for Coming Out!
-Leith
10/2/10 The Troubadour- West Hollywood CA.
Spent the day at home taking care of all those things that get left to do while out on tour. Made my way up to L.A. pretty excited to be running lights at the Troubadour. The place was packed as Truth and Salvage Co. came on as they have a definite L.A. following. They played a really nice long set that really amped up the crowd which actually didn’t thin out much at all. I do have to point out that showing up for the opening bands is a nice gesture and is appreciated by the opener and Headliner.
Going over the setlist with Josh was funny as he was pointing out each song that was a “good one for lights”and every song was.
Any way I was happy to have a better rig to work with and the House Guys were very helpful setting me up. Sitting to run lights though is pretty foreign to me but the space was not really conducive to standing. One thing that is a negative to working during the show is having the setlist and knowing what’s next. Takes away some of that mystery ya know?
Germinating Seed got the crowd right back into dance mode from talk/drink time and it continued on with a solid California which always elicits a roar here. Vote on Tuesday was particularly blazing and had a really sick jam that had the crowd screaming. Got No Friends in Arizona came out of Vote and kept the energy high. Fallen Angel was great to hear again and had the crowd again singing.
Now I forgot my set list and the night gets fuzzy from here but I do remember John Wooley came out on Sax during Waiting and totally tore the roof off! I mean this version ooozed ROCK and ROLL. He also came out on Invasion which is already one of their nastiest ripping tunes and with a Sax? OH damn! Papa’s was really great as the crowd took advantage of the small place and really let the band hear their voice singing. Criminal Intent got deep in the muck of swirly improv and came out clean.
Cottonwood Tree was explained by Josh to be about good times past in L.A. and this version was especially poignant and on point. Las Vegas was (insert adjective expletive here) AMAZING!! A bit faster tempo that fit the night and just powerful. Dragonfly again the new version was fiery but seemed a bit short. If it wasn’t for the Money had the crowd singing along and was a rollicking version that had me on my feet by the end. Taught to be Proud closed the show again with a huge sing along ( it’s so great to hear a packed house singing their songs).
Encore of Make a Connection had just enough grit to send everyone off satisfied. No real Leafer afterparties so I headed home.
Looking so forward to the last show of the California run and figuring out if AZ is really all that bad?
-Leith
10/1/10 The Soundwave -San Diego CA.
Finally a Hometown show on this tour! Woo Hoo! Spent the day running around picking up friends from the airport, obtaining party supplies and generally just getting ready for the show. It was a free show even if one did not go to the venue website for thier free pass.
3 bands this night with TLG coming on around 11:05. During the last opener I saw Josh and went up to thank him for the Saw Your Mama in Visalia. He motioned to the lights and said” You know if you ever want to jump up on lights feel free. I know you like to rage it up front but if you ever want to….” I told him I had been chomping at the bit all tour and would gladly run lights.
So this entry is going to be a bit short as I was more paying attention to them in a different way then while dancing.
The place was pretty packed and opening with These 2 Chairs got the crowd pumped. I spent the first 2 songs trying to figure out the broke ass lighting board they had. Truck was rollicking and really fit in after Truth and Salvage Co.’s set. Now the response to Ride was stupendous. The crowd knew the song and sung it loud. Easy to be.. was again a nice uptempo rocker that was nicely paired with Relax. Now luckily for me I found some presets that worked pretty darn well for Panspermic and the face melting began! A cool down came in the form of Good Bye Mary which did include one of Josh’s incendiary solos. All Washed Up got the crowd grooving again. Then came Lil Hood. Josh and Reed tore that shit up and Trevor got as spacey as he does these days with the keys laying down some fun sounds. Sick.
Drink of Streams for me was a delight to light as I bathed the stage in a Dark Blue complimenting the slow dynamic opening and making the wood block beginning a nice canvas for some strobe color matching their beat which I “see” every time I hear this song anyway and was finally able to actually do. I was stoked beyond belief. This version was beautiful to hear setting everyone up for some more rock in the Red Ribbons that followed and it is so nice to hear a crowd singing the songs loud enough to hear.
Dreaming was next and had some really nice textures from the “Dastardly Duo” of Johnny Bongo and Charlie Hustle. This combo is gelling hard and is creating some amazing space that the other 3 are jumping at to fill. Georgie P. made it’s usual San Diego appearance and was funky rock creating a serious madness on the dance floor. Zoom Zoom had the crowd pumped and was a total sing along as was the hard rocking Morning Sun which was the last song on the set list. Since I didn’t see anyone moving off the stage and Animal was just sitting there I knew more was to come.
I didn’t expect Trouble>Been So Long>Trouble at all and it was as damn good as you think it was. Man when this band does things like this it just makes you understand their passion for what they do. With that glorious sandwich they left the stage to a screaming crowd.
Trevor and Reed came out and started playing some light sweet improv it seemed which coalesced into a most beautiful Don’t Let It Down for 2 verses or so at which time the rest of the band joined in and continued to create one of the best versions of this song in a while from my memory. Let Us Go sent everyone off energized and realizing they just got Rocked hard.
I love how Tea Leaf Green just utterly destroys San Diego crowds.
I can’t describe enough how much fun it was to light this band and to hear them say they enjoyed it and appreciated it was a cloud this guy is not coming down from any time soon.
After ward Josh was saying if I want to I could set the lights come and dance then go back he and he was like” I don’t like to tell any one what to do but you know whatever you feel like doing.” Reed gave me a disc of some Jazz he has remastered Bird and Miles telling me to share so I will.. Look for an upload in the near future in Loony Bin in the Forum section of the site.
Can’t wait for the Troubadour tonight!
9.29.10 – Cellar Door – Visalia CA
So yeah Visalia. After a long day of flying/driving we checked into the hotel and we hear “What r u guys doing here?” We turn and Sauce is there with a plate of food. We check in and go down for some free grub and Josh walks in. Asks about the meatballs he sees on Jason’s plate and gets one meatball hahahaha.
Well not many folks there but the pros they are Tea Leaf Green still stepped up and gave us a show, while not on par with the rest of the tour at all, it defintely had it’s moments. Preshow hang with the guys was fun and they seemed ready for whatever came of the night crowdwise. Once again this was a Scott only show.
The band took the stage in a silent room. I cracked that it was too quiet they needed to make some noise. Josh agreed and the show began with Slept through Sunday which was great per usual. Borrowed Time had Josh tearing it up like it was Friday night in L.A.
Piss it Away took me by surprise as I kind of forgot about it. I was fully reminded of how truly mind twisting it was once the jam came in. New Shoes had everyone shuffling along and the jam once again featured Josh wailing. Can’t Get High and Bastard Brother were both great with Trevor’s keys a highlight.
Here’s where that playful band came out again. Someone yelled out John Brown and Trevor turned to the guys and said “John Brown?” and they killed it! The jam was so thick and dirty ahhhhh so good. Then Forgiven while it is a song looked forward to the placement seemed odd as the room needed no help dropping the energy level.
As if sensing this they asked for requests and an elderly guy slowly walked up to the stage and requested Puff The Magic Dragon which they took a playful shot at, though leaving it unfinished. I have to say here is where I started yelling for Saw Your Mama between songs. Another Moonshine was good with Trevor’s lyrics ringing out.
StormCloud was a very welcome song and thundered through the empty room. Now Kali Yuga wow I love when they pull out the rolling Kali that just moves along so fluidly. Dragonfly had the same bluegrass feel as at Moe’s but w/o Josh as into pushing the jam. So after the song Trevor was asking Josh how they wanted to do the next song with some little hand movements indicating a change or something I can only assume so I yelled out “Do it with Saw Your Mama in it”. So they go into Taught and in the middle of the jam Josh goes over to Trevor and leans in to say something and goes back all the while shredding. The jam continues and I hear the chords being played but couldn’t believe it at first and really until they started singing I was not sure it was going to happen but oh man did it ever! Jason and I tore up the floor like our lives depended on it. Swirly psychedelica at it’s best back into Taught and just like that the show was done. No chance for an encore this night.
Thanks fort having us though Visalia! Nice chat with Scott after the show and then off to sleep for the drive home tomorrow. Be back in a couple days from San Diego!
Sorry fellow Leafers I have been Hard Travelin’ for a bit.
So it has been over a decade since Tea Leaf Green has played in town but Harlow’s had a really nice crowd for a Tuesday.
A nice set from Truth and Salvage Co. set the tone for the night and it was ROCK!
The band was not expecting such a good crowd and came out with guns blazing to satiate the Rock hungry crowd.
California hit 11 quickly and 5000 Acres kept those fires burning and with a seamless transition Vote was thrust upon us with furious playing by all. I mentioned to Reed he may as well get a Mic back since he’s singing all the sings anyway as he’s playing,he said he was just fine singing along with us
I have to mention just how interactive Reed has been all tour. No back to the audience or constant fiddling with his Bass. He’s smiling playing little fills to thrill and genuinely having fun!
Time to catch our breath with Shallows and 7th Story. It gets blurry but sometime here the playful TLG came out. Josh serenaded us with a ditty abt drinking shots. Then my first Doin It Over with Reed and it contained one of the most interesting jams of the night. Honeymooners was strong and had everyone singing along. Easy to be your Lover was stronger than the one we got earlier on tour and IIWFT$ finally appeared and was played into a jam so deep the end chorus just burst out and truly surprised me. Not Fit with jam into Seed was pure rock and the following Ribbons and One Reason had everyone in the place screaming for more!! Broom was majestic, huge and full of exploration by the entire band. Let Us Go was not on the list but closed this show with passion.
The band came out for an encore and playfully Trevor and Reed were hitting the drums and making noise when Josh came out and began directing notes which coalesced into Waiting for my Man which is as Rock and Roll as u can get. Now after this everyone got up as if it were over. Well Josh had other ideas and Deathcake caused the mayhem it usually does as a mosh pit developed and the band fed of the frenzy created. This show had much of what drew many of us to this band. Creative musical choices, fun banter, silly antics and just an overall feeling of creating something together in a sweat filled room. The playing off each other and challenging each other sing after song and rolling with what each is playing is creating monster jams that surprise even themselves. I’m finding that travelling show to show is again a fruitful endeavor for Leafers far and wide.
Jump on this train again folks it’s rolling fast again!
9.26.10 – Day off and Trevor CD Release Party
Slept in and then eats in Berkeley and Disc Golf along the Estuary which included swamp diving and losing a disc. Hey that’s the risk you take right?
So back to the DuNord for another CD Release. I like the spot as it is pretty intimate and in /out is nice.
The heat can get to be much though. Missed Fred but saw Nathan Moore for the first time and was very impressed. Trevor’s set was really fun. I didn’t hear every song as I was mingling and conversing with people I don’t get to see often enough. The songs I did hear were great and the band he had backing him was stellar.
Oh it was Reed’s Birthday also which led to some fun drinking later that night.
“That’s why we keep coming back!” – Gretchen after 1st set 9/25/10
So after a day of soaking up the California heat along the coast we made it to Santa Cruz. Such a great seaside town with just enough affluence to keep the town as quaint as it is.
With the band’s history at Moe’s Alley the crowd gathering was full of expectation and wondering if we would finally get 2 sets. Well Cochrane was back and the guys were feeling great prior to the show so it was setting up to be pretty darn sweet!
One of the greatest feelings at a show is encountering people you do not expect so seeing RJ and Stacey was beyond happytime for me! I love Moe’s because TLG loves the place and this show surely showed that.
So onto the show. I took in the beginning of the show from the side raised bar area with a great view of Trevor and a speaker all for me. The opener of All Washed Up has proven to be a sure sign of the start of a show to remember.
Reservoir was dark and swampy and a real surprise as the second song. Guess we are in for one heck of a show.
New Shoes was next and brought the place to a fevered pitch with it’s rollicking melody and Josh’s signature playing. Cops had Reed playing a Lead Bass solo with distortion that amazed everyone the crowd reaction was undeniable.
The pairing of Seeking and Ocean View was truly a delight and the crowd adulation at that point was palpable as the band began one of the most feroucious Freedom’s ever played! The Moe’s favorite Santa Cruz had everyone in smiles and the opening chords of Papa’s had me running for the Bass Nook. Jubilee to end the set was glorious.
SETBREAK!!!! Time to visit and compare notes. This set break was truly a catalyst as people new to the band were able to discuss what they just witnessed with those of us that have seen a few shows.
Emma Lee>Morning Sun started the 2nd set out right even with Reed breaking yet another string(which he actually apologized to the front row for)and was nice as Al had brought his friend Emily (this being her 2nd show) and she really likes the song. After a bit of 3 string playing Sauce was able to restring and Reed was back to having 3 extraneous strings instead of just the 2. Now Nothing Changes was nothing short of powerful and had me in tears of joy.
A strong but slow combo of Connection and Innocence set everyone up for the majesty that is Jezebel which was played as psychedelic as usual which led into a beautiful though fast Carter into a most ripping Hot Dog. The oft requested Earth and Sky led into the most unique Dragonfly I have ever heard (After the show Reed told me it was the first time he had heard it that way as Scott made an executive decision and look what it wrought!) Totally rocking in different beats and just awesome!
Encore was sing along time with Truck Stop and then all out get down and dance with Gasaholic closing out the night.
Overall the best show of the tour so far for many reasons not the least being all the wonderful people sharing in the experience.
9.24.10 – El Rey Theatre – Chico, CA
So Chico is hot! The last time I was here was in 1994 for Phish and DMB – beautiful drive up to the City of Trees. Wandering the little town led us to hope for a good turnout for the show. Turns out the theatre they were playing was a gorgeous old place with great sound. Noticable by some right away was the abscence of the second drum kit. Hmmm ok back to raw TLG – cool! The few of us that came up made sure the locals knew it was ok to come up front and boogie!
Maybe it was the long drive and heat but it took the band a few songs to really get in gear. The energy of the crowd pushed the band to really bear down, which they proceeded to do in a big way. The full band improv so evident lately was in full effect during Kali>Cottonwood Tree. When Reed broke a string during Baseball it was a delight to watch him take off with the challange and never missed a note at one point playing only one string! It is so fun to watch the interaction on stage lead to amazing directions in the music.
Hung out with the guys after (Luckily I knew a little bit about Rambo) and had some fun convo and a bit of raging. It was nice to introduce my friend Brad(who was at his first show) to Reed and Josh in which he was able to dicuss the merits of both Bass playing vs Guitar from 2 of the scene’s best. Talking with Reed about how each of the band members have a different yet just as strong connection to Cochrane really made it clear just how much this is a family deal we got going on from the band on down. Talking about the new album and how they have been recording it was neat to hear also. Cochrane was visiting his little girl but will be along the rest of the run. Chico late nite was a bar filled mess so drinks in the room it was!
Wow! What a way to start the West Coast leg. To think the last time I saw this band was on the waters of NYC Harbor and they were good but this good? Sorry no.
Got into San Fran after a nice flight and hooked up with our ride to Petaluma. Had a great ride up through the wooded glory if Northern Cal.
So the Majestic theater is an older place and the smile on Josh’s face told it all. Tonight was going to get dirty! The opening salvo of Zoom Zoom and Germenatin’ Seed was a total surprise and left the front row with some scorched lids. The energy of the collective 100 or so people there propelled the band through the next 3 songs and then they gave back with an amazing version of Franz Hanzerbeak. Sean Leahy added shredding leads to Ride Together and 7th Story which added some fun. The rest of the show was a nice mix of new and old and the opening show of the West Coast tour was over.
Ride back to Oakland was full of optimism for what lies ahead in the next week!
The concept behind Can You Guess It? (CYGI?) is very similar to that of Fantasy Baseball and Fantasy Football. In these games, you pick players to form a team and you score points when the players on your team perform well in actual competition. In CYGI?, you select a team of songs that will be yours throughout an entire tour. You will pick 15 songs from 5 categories, each with different point structures and set songs to select from. When a song on your team is played live in concert and the location or type fits the category in which you placed it, then you score the point value associated with that category.
**West Coast tour includes shows from September 23rd to October 16th.
**Prizes will be awarded each Monday based on total points the week before. Winner gets choice of 2 shows from LART’s list of audio and video not publicly available, Runner-Up gets choice of 1 show. Total points for tour considered for Grandprize later this year.
**All questions or comments regarding categories, songs, points, etc. can made in the designated thread in “The Garden” forum on letsallridetogether.com, or be emailed to admin@letsallridetogether.com. Input will be considered for the next round of CYGI?
Categories
Freebies: These are songs that will more than likely be played multiple times throughout the tour. There are 3 subcategories – pick one song from each subcategory and receive 1 point each time each of those 3 songs are played throughout a tour.
Probables: These are songs that regularly show up in setlists. Pick 6 songs and receive 4 points for each song when it is played throughout a tour. **NOTE: There will be no set designation for openers and closers.
Covers: Pick 2 songs and receive 10 points the FIRST time they are played on tour, and receive 4 points every time they are played after that. **NOTE: Covers are defined as played at least 4 times overall, and at least 2 times since 12.7.07.
Bustouts/Rarities: Pick 3 songs and receive 15 points the FIRST time they are played on tour, and receive 4 points every time they are played after that. **NOTE: Bustouts/Rarities are defined as played 0 to 3 times in 2010, some tweaking has occurred due to Southern Tour setlists (see FAQs below).
Long shot: Pick 1 song and receive 30 points the FIRST time it is played on tour, and receive 4 points every time thereafter. **NOTE: Long shots are defined as not yet played or only played once since 12.7.07, some tweaking has occurred due to Southern Tour setlists (see FAQs below).
Deadline
The deadline for submitting your picks for the West Coast Tour is Thursday, September 23rd at 7:00PM (PST).
FAQs
What songs changed since the Southern Tour?
Sex in the ’70s moved from Freebies to Probables (only played once during Southern Tour)
Criminal Intent moved from Probables to Freebies (played 6 times during Southern Tour)
Barnacle B and Harvest Time moved from Bustouts/Rarities to Probables (played more than twice during Southern Tour)
Greta Ties Up Horses moved from Long Shots to Probables (played more than twice during Southern Tour).
Flipping the Bird, I’ve Been Seeking, Saw Yer Mama, and Slept Thru Sunday will remain in the Bustouts/Rarities category because even though they have been played at least 4 times this year, they were only played once during the Southern Tour and therefore still qualify as a bustout.
Why do some songs seem to be missing? Some songs were disqualified if they are primarily CBB songs or if they haven’t been played in over 280 shows.
Why are Been So Long and Trouble not in the Covers category? Because they are “Traditionals” – folk songs passed down through oral tradition without one singular identifiable original author.
Can I change my picks in the middle of a tour? No.
If a song I picked is only teased or jammed, do I still score points? No.
When are scores and standings posted? Scores and standings are posted after a confirmed setlist has been added to the letsallridetogether.com database. This will usually happen within 12 hours of the completion of a show, but there is no guarantee.
What if a song segues into a “sandwich” or “lasagna”? You still only score once for that song.
What if a song that is started is never completed? This will be scored will be decided on a case by case basis. As a general rule of thumb, if the instance of that song is only footnoted in the setlist, then it will not score points. However, if the song itself appears in the setlist with a footnote stating that it was an incomplete version, then it will score points.
What if a show is added to a tour after the tour starts? Any show added to the letsallridetogether.com setlist database will earn points. Promotional appearances and side projects are generally not entered in to the database.
Soon after this tragedy Desert Rocks decided to sign Dan Lebowitz as an artist at large. This got people talking and led to a break through idea by one of the Keep It Moist queens. If only one member of both bands was keeping either from playing why not sign a few members from both to create a rock n’ roll band of monstrous proportions. The name TLO also has some interesting play behind it as the letters have several potential meanings. Shows where more than one member of TLG participates in an unnamed collaboration or a non-TLG initiated project (ex: Everyone Orchestra), are listed under “Random Gigs” (coming soon)
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (JFJO/The Fred): Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a US jazz group founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1994. It has had many iterations of artists over the years and currently consists of pianist Brian Haas, drummer Josh Raymer, upright bassist Matt Hayes, and guitarist Chris Combs. Reed Mathis a was founding member of JFJO but on January 2009 announced he was leaving to pursue other endeavors (become TLG’s full time bassist…YAY!)
Once we had a pile of songs recorded we looked at them all and there was a group of tracks within the group of songs that really jumped out at us. So we got together several times and took everything we recorded—every take of everything—and took notes. We observed ourselves several months after the fact, which is a very educational process. Then we decided to focus on the thirteen songs that ‘asked’ to be grouped together. There was no specific intention behind this record. That came after we looked at everything we recorded and saw there was an obvious group within it. – Reed Mathis
His fine ear, instinct, overall vision, knack for pulling the right performances from the musicians and pure studio technical savvy are apparent on this album. While he’s dabbled for ages, this set reveals a cut-and-splice maestro in the making”
“Picture, if you will, the combined DNA of Albert Einstein, Babtunde Olatunji, George Harrison, Jimmy Cliff, David Byrne, Billy Martin, Gil Evans, Jerry Garcia, Terrance McKenna, Bob Marley, Yoda, Roger Waters and the Scarecrow from the Land of Oz. Imagine a consciousness so quietly powerful that people who spent only a few hours around him would say years later that the experience forever changed the course of their life. Like Van Gogh, a man whose vision of the world was so vividly radiant and psychedelic … a beauty so new that anyone who looks at it is suddenly given new eyes, yet it allowed him no peace.
Sean Layton lived 30 years on Earth, and among his many accomplishments he instructed Brian Haas & Reed Mathis in the ways of the Force, founded the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, and wrote some of the most beautiful and true music I have ever heard. Very little of this music has been heard…. until now.
This collection of vocal songs ranges from reggae to hillbilly, West Africa to hip hop. And these lyrics, man, they peel like a Jungian Onion. Featuring Brian, Reed, and everyone who has ever been in JFJO, as well as pedal-steel/guitar virtuoso Steve Pryor, brother-guitarist Dylan Layton, and a full gospel choir of Okie Shamans, in various combinations & ensembles, recorded in studios & clubs from Oklahoma to San Francisco over several years.
We offer this album in grateful tribute to our brother & teacher, the truly inimitable Sean Layton.
–Reed Mathis
“I hope you catch this vibe somehow.”
We all met at the epic September ’07 Blender run in NYC, but it wasn’t until we spent tons of time traveling and hanging out together on the “New Year’s Boomerang Run” that conversations about stats and documenting side projects evolved into a full blown website. Somewhere between NY > VA > NY > MD > CT > NY, the idea of LART was born.
"New Year's Boomerang Run" - The 8x10 in Baltimore, MD - 12.30.07
The concept of LART was publicly launched during the April 2008 Green Apple Festival in New York City. As a side project of our own there were some challenges along the way, but during the fall of 2009 we had finally finished entering all the historical setlists, built the blog posts with all the side project and leafer information, and a bunch of other bells and whistles. In early 2010 we were approached by TLG management to take over the administration of the long-running tlg.com forum, and we launched the LART forum on March 14th – preserving years of leafer conversations.
Guyute, Topes, and Brew in NYC - 7.12.10
All of this was done over the interwebs (thank you googledocs!). We emailed, chatted online, had loooong conference calls, and saw each other in pairs at shows for the next 28 months.
It wasn’t until July 12th, 2010, on a boat sailing around Manhattan, that the three of us got to see a face-melting show together for the first time in 2 1/2 years…
The concept behind Can You Guess It? (CYGI?) is very similar to that of Fantasy Baseball and Fantasy Football. In these games, you pick players to form a team and you score points when the players on your team perform well in actual competition. In CYGI?, you select a team of songs that will be yours throughout an entire tour. You will pick 15 songs from 5 categories, each with different point structures and set songs to select from. When a song on your team is played live in concert and the location or type fits the category in which you placed it, then you score the point value associated with that category.
**Southern tour includes shows from August 26th to September 9th.
**Prizes will be awarded each Monday based on total points the week before (specifics TBD).
**All questions or comments regarding categories, songs, points, etc. can made in the designated thread in “The Garden” forum on letsallridetogether.com, or be emailed to admin@letsallridetogether.com. Input will be considered for the next round of CYGI?
Freebies: These are songs that will more than likely be played multiple times throughout the tour. There are 3 subcategories – pick one song from each subcategory and receive 1 point each time each of those 3 songs are played throughout a tour.
Probables: These are songs that regularly show up in setlists.
Covers: Pick 2 songs and receive 10 points the FIRST time they are played on tour, and receive 4 points every time they are played after that. **NOTE: Covers are defined as played at least 4 times overall, and at least 2 times since 12.7.07.
Bustouts/Rarities: Pick 3 songs and receive 15 points the FIRST time they are played on tour, and receive 4 points every time they are played after that. **NOTE: Bustouts/Rarities are defined as played 0 to 3 times in 2010.
CYGI Southern Tour Tournament Submissions CLOSED
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Deadline

The deadline for submitting your picks for the Southern Tour is Thursday, August 26th at 8:30PM (EST).

FAQs

Why do some songs seem to be missing? Some songs were disqualified if they are primarily CBB songs or if they haven’t been played in over 280 shows.

Can I change my picks in the middle of a tour? No.

If a song I picked is only teased or jammed, do I still score points? No.

When are scores and standings posted? Scores and standings are posted after a confirmed setlist has been added to the letsallridetogether.com database. This will usually happen within 12 hours of the completion of a show, but there is no guarantee.

What if a song segues into a “sandwich” or “lasagna”? You still only score once for that song.

What if a song that is started is never completed? This will be scored will be decided on a case by case basis. As a general rule of thumb, if the instance of that song is only footnoted in the setlist, then it will not score points. However, if the song itself appears in the setlist with a footnote stating that it was an incomplete version, then it will score points.

What if a show is added to a tour after the tour starts? Any show added to the letsallridetogether.com setlist database will earn points. Promotional appearances and side projects are generally not entered in to the database.

The methodology: for every pre-2006 show, 1 point was given for every time mentioned on the forum; for 2006, 2007, and 2008 we’ve taken OnTheBus’s “Top Shows of the Year” threads, added them to the individual votes, and compiled the top 10 for each year. Some subjectivity was used (we had to balance for every time MK said “1-10-04″). We’ve only listed the top 10 so as to not overwhelm.

For the first half of 2009 we took shows from ‘A Free Cup Of Tea: Fan’s picks Vol. 1′, rolled them together with a few others and came up with a top 10. Top downloads for the last half of 2009, and the first half of 2010, hopefully coming soon.

Note: Shows with (20+) after the link indicate over 20 leafers and fiends recommended this show. Translated that means ‘if this show isn’t in your collection, you are seriously missing out….’

Coffee Bean Brown (CBB)/TLG Acoustic: We’ve pulled out the full Coffee Bean Brown shows and placed them at the top because many will agree that these are quintessential downloads for any fan to have.

Even though they’re a little more decaffeinated version than the regular tea, they just seem to represent some of the bands songs in their purist, most original forms…These shows really feature the songwriting and lyrics of the band. – brutha g
